5 ways to improve your creative thinking

In this hyper-challenging business environment, innovation is the key to survival. Here are five ways to turn your brain into a creative powerhouse.

Big ideas start by asking simple questions. Steve Jobs’ vision for the original Apple smartphone came about when he picked up a mobile and simply pondered how he could make it better. And the product of his thinking, of course, changed the world.

As we unite to fight the impact of COVID-19 on our business by finding new ways to create revenue, follow the steps below, and you too could have your own Eureka moment that will contribute to the long-term future of our company and make you an all-round Dusit hero.

5. Explore the ‘three ifs’

Think of a product, a service, a system, a process etc., and ask yourself the following:

  1. What would happen if I change it?
  2. What would I change or improve about this product/service/system/object if I wanted to use it in 10 years?
  3. What would I do if I had one-million-dollars to improve it?
Brainstorm as a group and lots of ideas are bound to pop up.

4. Look outside hospitality for inspiration

Broaden your scope and look at what other industries are doing to innovate their offerings. Can elements of these innovations be applied to what Dusit is doing in general, or meet the needs of guests/customers in a new/better way?

3. Eat healthily and exercise regularly

The Devarana Wellness and KAUAI teams will back us up on this one. You’ll be shocked how much more creatively you can think when you make healthy eating and exercise a habit. For exercise – here’s a recent clip from Dusit Thani Hua Hin’s stretching guru, Wipawan Kongnimit, to get you started.

2. Always be prepared to note down your ideas

Have an amazing idea? Write it down on paper (or on a note app on your phone) as soon as possible. Bursts of insight can be fleeting – and they are especially quick to disappear if you get distracted by a funny cat video on Instagram.

1. Recognise that being creative is easier than you think

Most people think creativity is about coming up with original ideas. But, in reality, it’s about making connections between existing ideas and attempting to make them better – such as Steve Jobs with the mobile phone. Approach creativity with this mindset, and you’ll find it much easier to form ideas based on what you already know (and asking questions like the ones listed in point number 5 above).
