Watts Up at Dusit Thani Guam

Resort’s campaign to save energy is a shining example of sustainability in action

Recognising that cooling and heating command up to 40% to 60% of the utilities cost in tropical climates, Dusit Thani Guam’s engineering department recently rolled out a special programme to raise awareness of the issue and help control the hotel’s costs.

Named ‘Watts Up Dusit Thani Guam,’ the programme is aimed at employees responsible for managing energy consumption in the hotel, together with those who have supporting roles, including internal communications and training staff.

Designed to highlight how energy awareness leads to cost savings that lead to higher profit margins and increased job security and/or profit-related bonuses, the programme is focused on four key areas – Electricity, Water, Sewage, and LPG.

From introducing posters and banners about energy-saving in the engineering room, to launching energy-related competitions, offering monthly prizes for best performers, and making sure equipment is used correctly to enhance efficiency and expand its lifespan, the programme has helped to usher in an energy-savings culture under the motto “Energy Savings is Everyone’s Job,” with all new employees informed about the importance of energy-saving in their training.

To protect the environment and promote recycling, the engineering department has also stopped purchasing Styrofoam and created a mug rack from a pallet they thoughtfully repurposed.

How effective is the Watts Up programme?

Since Watts Up was launched in October 2018, the hotel has recorded a 9.7% increase in room nights – but power usage has actually decreased by 9.43%.

And we think that’s a suitably bright note to end on.

Awesome work, team!
